Bangladesh throughout history has been known for its excellent handloom fabrics. The handloom has been a part of the country's cultural heritage. Throughout the middle ages until the commencement of the industrial revolutions in Europe, fine quality muslin and mulmul from Bengal were highly valued as the finest textiles and exported in large quantities to countries in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.
Handlooms represent the largest rural industry in Bangladesh and as an industry this sector is placed on the top in the national economy after agriculture, the domestic productions from the handloom sector at present comes to 77 percent of the entire cloth production in the country. The industry also adds up to about 33 percent of the country's manufacturing employment and about 15 percent off the manufacturing GDP.
